MMK Produces Record-Setting 600m Tons of Hot-Rolled Goods

UrBC, Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk Region, September 27, 2012. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) produced 600m tons of hot-rolled goods. This is a record-setting figure in the company’s history as well as the highest one among all the Russian ferrous metallurgical enterprises.

‘It is symbolic that the plant’s rolling department workers set this record in the year when MMK celebrates a special anniversary: the enterprise turned 80 on February 1, 2012. There are many glorious pages in the book of MMK’s forming history. July 27, 1933, when the first ingot was made at blooming mill 2, is considered MMK forming division’s birthday. The USSR People’s Commissar for Heavy Industry Sergo Ordzhonikidze was present at the opening ceremony of the unit. A year later, on August 8, 1934, MMK’s first section mil 500 was launched, which meant that the plant at the foot of Mount Magnitnaya turned into a full-cycle metallurgical enterprise. Over the years, MMK built up on production output and set gigantic metal goods production records. The enterprise had made its first million ton of rolled goods by July 1936. By February 1964, the company manufactured 100m tons. On July 20, 1974, MMK made its 200,000,000th ton of rolled goods. On February 1, 1991, the 400,000,000th ton was produced. 450m tons of rolled goods were made by June 22, 1997, and in July 2003, the company’s production output reached 500m tons. And now we have a new record: 600m tons of rolled goods. If you visualize all the rolled products produced at MMK in the form of a hot-rolled sheet that is 5mm thick, this sheet would cover the area of over 15,000 sq km, or about 50% of Belgium’s territory,’ MMK reports.
