Cold-Roll Facility Completed at MMK

The second extension to the cold-roll facility was launched at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK); the launching ceremony was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The facility, which has the capacity of 2m tons of goods a year, is mainly intended for the production of high quality cold-rolled and zinc-coated rolled products for the external and internal car parts in accordance with the latest technologies; what is more, these goods can also be used for making white goods as well as in the building industry. The project required a total of 44.5bn RUR worth of investments (including ?490m worth of machinery purchased under contracts).

The decision to put up a cold-roll facility for manufacturing world-standard quality automobile body sheets was made by MMK BOD Chairman Viktor Rashnikov in February 2007.
‘The need to launch new facilities has to do with the growing demand for extremely good quality cold-rolled produce, primarily the kind that is used for manufacturing automobile bodies,’ the company reports.

The contract for the delivery of equipment meant for the first extension to the cold-roll facility, Mill 2000, was signed by MMK and the German machine-building concern SMS-Demag in July 2007.

The construction started in March 2008. In July 2011, the first section of the facility (a continuous etching unit combined with a five-section cold-roll Mill 2000) was launched. Vladimir Putin took part in that launching ceremony, too. He then commented on the project’s great importance to the entire Russian industry.

The facility is expected to reach its designed capacity before the end of this year. The implementation of this project will mean MMK can increase the share of cold-rolled and zinc-coated goods in the total volume of produce it makes, expand the range of varieties of goods it offers to customers, and provide the carmakers with high quality cold-rolled and galvanized body sheets, including those made of highly durable HSLA, IF-HSS, BH, and TRIP steels and duplex and poly-phase steels that meet all the modern requirements for these kinds of produce.
