MMK Mill 2000 tries out steel rolling

14.11.2011
UrBC, Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk Region, November 14, 2011. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) keeps working on the production of new cold-rolled sheet products using the first section of its cold-roll Mill 2000.

According to the company’s PR Department, the recent series of tests has shown that Mill 2000 can roll both the ordinary kinds of steel and the kinds with the lower reeling temperatures. The rolling of duplex steels was successful as well, just as that of highly durable DP600 and DP1200 steels (the latter was dealt with for the first time in Russia). In fact, only a few companies in Europe can now manufactures steels with such characteristics and strength grade over 1,200.

According to MMK Director-General Boris Dubrovsky, Mill 2000 is coping really well with the tasks it is supposed to do: the needed thickness, width, and edge milling have been obtained already. The rolled metal has been packed up and transferred for testing in the new zinc-coating unit. In the meanwhile, the enterprise keeps up with its monthly program of testing various kinds of steel with varying strength grades.

The company’s sheet-rolling shop 11 is currently engaged in the production of semi-finished rolled stock for further zinc-coating at the company’s equipment as well as semi-finished rolled stock for the cold-rolled metal products for the automobile industry.

‘MMK management took a multi-faceted approach to training the personnel for the new cold-roll facility. The core of the team is made up of workers transferred from MMK’s other divisions, with their average age coming to under thirty. The training for the new mill is done in many ways, including within-the-contract training: our experts undergo training and internships not only at MMK sites but also at the enterprises of our supplier SMS-Siemag. We also get a lot of help from the experts at ThyssenKrupp,’ the company reports.

The second extension to the cold-roll mill is currently being put up. The continuous annealing aggregate is expected to be launched in June 2012, and by mid-July, when Metallurgist’s Day is celebrated, the zinc-coating, the strip control, and the packaging units will probably start operating.

The cold-roll unit has the capacity of 2m tons of goods a year and is meant for the production of high-quality cold-rolled and zinc-coated rolled products for the automobile industry as well as for while goods manufacturers and the building industry.
