12.10.2011
Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) underwent external audit by Ford Motor Company a short while ago; the audit was focused on the company’s automobile body sheets production.

Nearly all the departments were involved in the audit procedures. Ford Motor Company representatives visited MMK’s oxygen converter shop, the coatings shop, and sheet-rolling shops No. 5, 10, and 11 that are involved in the automobile body sheet production. A presentation on MMK produce’s potential and the company’s production possibilities was also made. Besides, Ford’s experts got acquainted with the particulars of repairs process, employee training, input control of materials, and produce quality control.

It was observed in the end that MMK was generally ready to fulfill the orders that could meet Ford Motor Company’s requirements. According to MMK’s PR Department, the launch of the cold roll Mill 2000 with its automated strip quality control system and the introduction of statistical SPC control methods were pointed out as the company’s strong points.

The external audit by Ford Motor Company experts was carried out within the framework of MMK metal goods acceptance program for Russian and foreign carmakers. This program comprises approval of the enterprise’s technical processes and goods by the world’s leading automobile and white goods manufacturers.

‘One of our strategic goals consists in turning MMK into the leading supplier of metal goods for the Russian automobile industry,’ says MMK’s Director-General Boris Dubrovsky.

The company keeps building up on the volume of shipments to Russian carmakers. For one, the share of goods meant for the car manufactures in the total volume of domestic market shipments rose by 7.3% in the first half of 2011. The total volume of shipments to Russian car manufacturers amounted to 262,000 tons, which is 35% more than in the first half of 2010 and much more than in the entire year 2009.

The launch of the new cold roll Mill 2000 will also facilitate the increase in the company’s domestic market shipments. The new mill with the capacity of 2m tons of high quality automobile body sheets a year was launched in July. The second extension to the mill will be launched next year.
