MMK Spends More on Environmental Projects

1.09.2011
Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) came up with its environmental performance report for the first half of 2011.

According to the enterprise’s PR Department, the company is now recycling considerably more industrial waste when compared with the first half of 2010 thanks to the launch and full use of slag recycling facilities. In the first half of 2010, for example, MMK recycled 4m tons of smelter, blast furnace, and waste slag, whereas in the first half of 2011, the figure came to as much as 5.76m tons (an increase of 44%). As a result, half a million tons of metal material was taken back to the metallurgical production process. What is more, 878,000 tons of slag and crushed stone material were shipped to consumers and over 4.6m tons of waste and slag got used to restore the mines of Mount Magnitnaya; finally, more than 1.27m tons of industrial waste went to the sintering plant at the ore mining and processing division.

In the six months of 2011, MMK spent 1.3bn RUR on the construction of new and the restoration of existing ‘green’ facilities against 179.8m RUR spent in the first half of 2010. Most of this money (845.5.m RUR) was directed to the construction of facilities at the company’s sheet-rolling shop 11, namely, the air-cleaning units for Mill2000 and recirculation water supply systems. All in all, MMK invested 1.796m RUR in environmental projects in the first half of 2011 compared with 625m RUR in the first half of 2010.
