MMK Ships More to Carmakers

2.08.2011
Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) shipped more metal goods to carmakers in the first half of 2011 than in the entire year 2009.

In order to meet the strategic goal of becoming the Russian automobile industry’s leading supplier, MMK keeps increasing the volume of shipments to the Russian carmakers. In 2009, the share of goods delivered to the Russian car manufacturers came to 209,000 tons (4.8% in the entire volume of metal goods shipped onto the Russian market). In 2010, the volume of shipments nearly doubled and amounted to 406,000 tons (6.4% of all the domestic market shipments). In the first half of 2011, the share of shipments to the carmakers rose to 8.1%, or 262,000 tons, which is much more than the figure for the entire year 2009.

It is expected that the recent launch of new cold roll Mill 2000 at MMK will help the enterprise further to increase its automobile market shipments output. The mill is primarily meant for making high quality automobile body sheets. The solemn opening ceremony of the first section of the new cold roll facility on July 15, 2011 was attended by Head of Russian Federation Government Vladimir Putin, who said the launch of Mill 2000 was a great event for all of the country’s metallurgical and car-making industry.

MMK’s new cold roll facility is already shipping its first products to the Russian automobile manufacturers. Once the mill, which is currently unique to Russia, has reached its full capacity, MMK will be able to offer the Russian carmakers a full range of cold rolled sheets made of extremely durable steel that are needed for the production of new Russian car makes. The range of products this machinery will allow us to make will also meet most of the needs of the foreign carmakers that operate in Russia. This will make it possible for the foreign automobile manufacturers with plants in Russia to reduce their expenses and to localize their production more thoroughly, MMK reports.
