Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) won two gold medals at Metal Expo 2009, the international industrial exhibition in Moscow, the company reports.

The medals were introduced to encourage and reward the Russian industrial, scientific and production, and research teams that have designed and launched some new machinery, technologies, or high quality metal goods that meet the modern technological standards. These gold and silver medals are awarded to the best enterprises and organizations.

MMK was proclaimed the exhibition laureate and given Metal Expo 2009 gold medal for the development and launch of hot-rolled pipe steel rolls production technology (patent No. 2360748, No. 2343019, and No.2356658). This award signifies the enterprise’s efforts to remain the Russian pipe industry’s leading metal goods supplier. For one, the company delivered 1,630 tons of metal goods to the domestic pipe manufacturers last year alone. This figure actually made up a quarter of MMK’s total home market sales in 2008. This year, Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works launched the unique Mill 5000 meant primarily for the production of plate iron needed in large-diameter pipe manufacturing process. The mill is currently being tried out; for one, the manufacturing process involving sheets with X70 strength index has already been fully mastered.

Another gold medal was given to MMK for its joint project with I.P. Bardin Central Scientific and Research Institute of Ferrous Metals Federal State Unitary Enterprise regarding the industrial launch of a new class of low-carbon zinc-coated steel with enhanced durability. This steel can be used by a wide variety of industrial consumers.
