UrBC, Magnitogorsk, March 17, 2020. Director-General at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) Pavel Shilyayev took part in a recent meeting chaired by Plenipotentiary Representative of Russian Federation President in Ural Federal District Nikolai Tsukanov; the meeting was dedicated to the implementation of National Environment Project in Ural Federal District.

According to MMK’s Information & PR Department, Shilyayev gave a talk on how the company manages to reduce its environmental impact and thus to improve Magnitogorsk’s environment.

‘MMK’s ten-year development strategy (adopted in 2010) covers over $7bn worth of investments in production upgrades and provides for a significant drop in the company’s environmental impact,’ Shilyayev said.

MMK implemented a number of important green projects in 2015-2019, building a new sulphur-filtering facility, a THF gas-filtering unit, a blast furnace dust-collecting unit, a special-purpose dam, and new Sintering Plant 5 with twenty highly efficient impact-reducing appliances. The company invested RUB 20bn into the projects in these five years.
‘As a result, the company’s gross air emissions dropped by 14,600,000 kg a year, whilst switching to a close water recirculation system brought manufacturing water discharge to Magnitogorsk Reservoir down to zero,’ Shilyayev’s report states.
