UrBC, Magnitogorsk, January 23, 2020. Continuous Hot Dip Galvanizing Line 3 at Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) produced 334,600,000 kg of zinc-coated rolled metal goods last year, MMK’s Information & PR Department reports.
‘A year earlier, 278,900,000 kg of zinc-coated rolled metal goods were produced on the line. This means the line has nearly reached its projected capacity of 360,000,000 kg of goods a year. The line is located on the site of Sheet-Rolling Department 11 and is meant for making zinc-coated goods: the cold-rolled, thin-sheeted metal goods made from low-carbon steels undergo hot-dip galvanizing treatment. The equipment was supplied by the German machine-building concern SMS group under the terms of the contract signed in July 2015. The project cost RUB 6bn to complete. The line uses cold-rolled strips from Sheet-Rolling Department 11 as semi-finished rolled stock,’ the company says.
According to Chair of the BOD at MMK Viktor Rashnikov, the project was part of the plant’s strategy to make more deep-level processing goods with high value-added.
‘This strategy has never let us down. Once Continuous Hot Dip Galvanizing Line 3 has been launched, MMK started making over 2,000,000,000 kg of zinc-coated rolled metal goods a year (against only 100,000,000 kg as recently as the year 2000),’ Rashnikov says.
In November 2017, MMK won the Event of The Year in Russia’s Metallurgical Sector Contest for the construction of its Continuous Hot Dip Galvanizing Line 3. The contest gets coordinated as part of the International Industrial Exhibition Metal Expo every year.
