25 December 2019 (11:22)
UrBC, Magnitogorsk, December 25, 2019. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) was featured in WWF Russia’s and National Rating Agency’s rating of the country’s top ten environmentally responsible companies for 2019, MMK’s Information & PR Department reports.
‘WWF Russia has been carrying its environmental ratings on a yearly basis since 2017 in order to help reduce environmental impact and promote responsible business practices in Russia. The rating is based on the assessment of the following three criteria: environmental management, environmental impact, and a company’s openness to environment-related issues. In 2019, there were forty-one companies in the mining and metallurgical sector featured in the rating,’ the company says.
MMK pays close attention to making its production greener. 69 successful environmental projects were carried out last year alone, and fifteen projects are currently continuing. In 2000-2018, MMK invested more than RUB 58m in environmental programs, which resulted in 1.6-time drop in the amount of gross air emissions (and a 2.1-time drop in specific emissions) and a 2.4-time drop in the amount of gross water discharge. At the moment, MMK is using 100% of its manufacturing water within its re-circulation system.
