UrBC, Magnitogorsk, October 31, 2019. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) keeps working to modernize its blast furnace facilities, MMK’s leading expert at the Blast Furnace Department’s Tech Group Vitaly Beginyuk said at the Best Available Blast Furnace Production Techniques Conference in Magnitogorsk.

According to Beginyuk, MMK has reconstructed the casting beds of four blast furnaces in the last few years, which reduced the amount of harmful emissions in Magnitogorsk air considerably.

‘We started upgrading the casting beds of MMK’s blast furnaces in 2013; the first blast furnace to get renovated was Blast Furnace 6. This was the plant’s first furnace to get new liner and dust suction fixtures. Additionally, we had a blast-furnace gun and a post-hole digger installed for the first time. Special hoisting appliances were also introduced to lift the liner covers. These upgrades both reduced the plant’s air emissions and improved the working conditions on the site,’ MMK’s Information & PR Department reports.

In 2016-2017, overhauls of casting beds of Blast Furnaces 9 and 10 followed, also with new liner and dust suction fixtures, blast-furnace guns, post-hole diggers, and mechanic arms installed in place. In 2018, a part of Blast Furnace 1 underwent the same reconstruction procedures. Besides, some modifications were introduced in the furnace’s cooling system: the vertical cooling beds got replaced with horizontal copper ones.
