UrBC, Yekaterinburg, August 12, 2019. Rosatom/Atomenergomash’s SverdNIIkhimmash and Atomstroyeksport signed an agreement to design, manufacture, and supply solid radioactive waste transportation equipment for Power Generating Units 3, 4, and 5 at Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in India, the company’s press service reports.

The equipment for Power Generating Unit 3 is expected to get delivered in June 2021; the equipment for Power Generating Unit 5 is expected to get delivered in the summer of 2023.

‘The equipment will be used to transfer solid radioactive waste onto the storage/processing site. The equipment is meant to ensure bio-protection of staff in charge of collecting, transporting, and reloading the solid radioactive waste. Alongside the rest of the equipment, a control system will get supplied that can automatically monitor, classify, and systematize the waste. More than fifty equipment units will get supplied to India all in all,’ the press service says.

‘Waste treatment technology is one of SverdNIIkhimmash’s key areas of focus. Nearly all of Russian nuclear power plants rely on the evaporation plants, impregnation treatment plants, incineration plants, and waste compactors made at SverdNIIkhimmash. Now that new nuclear power plants and power-generating units are getting launched abroad, we are shipping our produce worldwide,’ says Senior Engineer at KP RAO Denis Bulatov.

SverdNIIkhimmash is the Russian nuclear industry’s engineering center and the leading plant to design equipment and technological solutions for the radiochemical industry, nuclear fuel cycle front-end sector and radioactive waste treatment/disposal sector. The company designs and makes evaporation, desalination, and solidification units.
