UrBC, Magnitogorsk, July 26, 2018. A special cycling race took place in Magnitogorsk on Saturday, July 21 in celebration of Metallurgist’s Day. According to Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works’ PR Department, this is the tenth time the race has taken place in town.
The event was coordinated by the town council’s PE, Sports & Tourism Department, Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works, MSTK Sports Club, Magnitogorsk Cycling Federation, Young Metallurgists’ Union, and the non-profit Dvizheniye. The forty-kilometer-long cycling race took off from the memorial in Stroiteley St and then through the intersection of Moskovskaya St and Lenin Ave and across Sovetskaya St, Vokzalnaya St, and Shuravi Filling Station to Lake Solenoye and Metallurg-Magnitogorsk Ski Resort. Two water-drinking points were set up along the route.
Everyone over eighteen (and professional cyclists over fourteen) could take part in the race. The male and female amateur athletes competed in six different age groups and six and five different categories for men and women, respectively. Professionals of all ages competed in one and the same age group, with different categories for male and female competitors. The race began at 10:00 AM with five hundred sports men and women — young athletes from nearby towns, experienced cyclists from Magnitogorsk, and amateurs from Magnitogorsk, Beloretsk, Kopeysk, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, and many other locations.
