UrBC, Magnitogorsk, March 2, 2018. The year 2017 proved a special one for Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) thanks to a number of new production records set last year, the company press service reports.

The plant’s hot-roll Mill 2500 reached a 180m-tons-of hot-rolled-metal-goods point last February after the initial launch in 1960. This rolling mill, one of MMK’s largest, is currently being reconstructed (with all the renovation jobs to be completed by 2020). This is expected to raise the mill’s production output from 3.6m tons to 5m tons a year.

MMK is also planning to build a new Cross-Cutting Unit 1 in order to complement its current range of produce with thin and thick metal strips with improved consumer properties, that is, the highly durable ones and the tube strip varieties.

Additionally, the plant’s Mill 2350 produced its 30,000,000th ton of metal goods in May 2017. The mill was made at Uralmash in 1935 and had to be evacuated from Zaporozhstal to Magnitogorsk during the war. The mill was re-launched at MMK in the summer of 1942. It was used to make defense produce in war times (armor for armored gunboats, vans, and storm troopers).

Finally, MMK made its 800,000,000th ton of steel after the launch of its first blast furnace in 1933.
