UrBC, Chelyabinsk, December 15, 2017. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) was featured in the WWF Top10 rating of Russia’s environmentally responsible mining and metallurgical companies, MMK press service reports.
MMK came 8th in the rating, which is the best result among all Russian ferrous metallurgical enterprises. The rating and the findings of the research it was based on were presented at the UN representation in Russia on December 11, on the eve of the 5th All-Russian Environmental Protection Congress.
The rating of Russia’s environmentally responsible mining and metallurgical companies featured thirty-three major businesses in this sector. The rating makes it possible to compare the extent of their environmental awareness and the scale of their environmental impact (including that on biodiversity). The rating also helps to assess how transparent these companies are in terms of disclosing environmentally relevant information, as it is based on the data the companies make available to the general public.
MMK’s environmental initiatives have received expert acknowledgment before: They were also among the Top10 projects by Russian fuel and energy and metallurgical companies in the first half of 2017. This rating was carried by the TV channel Zhivaya Planeta and the MOMRI.
MMK sees ongoing reduction and prevention of its harmful environmental impact and introduction of the best technologies available as the key elements of its strategy that can ensure the company’s long-term, sustainable development. The plant intends to invest over RUR 35bn in its environmental policy initiatives by 2025.
