MMK Gets Bigger Share of Automobile Body Sheet Market

20 April 2017 (14:04)

UrBC, Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk Region, April 20, 2017. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) supplied 473,000,000 kg of metal goods to carmakers last year, which was 12.6% more than one year previously.

‘Automobile body sheets used to make 6% of MMK’s domestic market sales last year and made 6.5% of home market shipments this year. Given that, as Rosstat says, the Russian car-making market shrank by 7.4% in 2016, the increase of this company’s share of the market is even more impressive,’ the company says.

This trend is particularly pronounced with foreign carmakers operating localized car factories in Russia. MMK sold them 34.5% more metal goods last year than one year perviously, with figures rising from 20,000,000 kg to 26,900,000 kg. All in all, the company is now selling four times more metal goods to foreign car manufacturers’ local plants than in 2013. This year, the company also expects to ensure yet another increase in sales.

MMK is one of the leading ferrous metal goods suppliers for car manufacturers and related car part-making industries. The company’s rolled metal produce has been approved of by over 80% of Russia-based carmakers. 60% of car manufacturers choose MMK as their regular supplier. The company keeps working on import substitution and getting an approved metal goods supplier status. Last year, MMK proved the only metallurgical company to win the Russian Automobile Forum Award for its achievements and contribution to the development of the Russian car making industry.
