June 3, 2014. The fan zone in Mayakovsky Central Park in Yekaterinburg is expected to be expanded for the World Football Championship of 2018 so that it can fit 35,000 people, Director of The Urals' Capital Anna Baichibayeva said at a press conference today.
The venue that is now being prepared for hosting the visitors to Supporters' Festival in Yekaterinbrg in 2014 is only big enough for 5,000 people.
'Under the FIFA requirements, a fan zone must be at least as big as to host 35,000 viewers. We are now considering the idea of putting up a fan zone in the park. The current venue will become one of its parts, as the fan zone for 2018 is expected to comprise several sites, not just one big one,' Ms Baichibayeva explained.
The fan zone in Mayakovsky Central Park will be opened on June 13, 2014. All the jobs relating to the preparation of the site are to be completed by June 5. According to the Director of The Urals' Capital, new asphalt was laid just the other day.
'We only have the lighting posts and the fence left. The site is pretty much finished,' Baichibayeva said.
She pointed out that a transparent two-meter fence would be put up around the zone to ensure safety, and entrance will be made through a special hallway with separate entry and exit sections. All those entering the zone will have to pass through metal detectors. Besides, CCTV cameras will be installed throughout the zone.
120 volunteers, most of whom have worked at Universiade in Kazan and at Sochi Olympics before, will work at the park during the Supporters' Festival.
