MMK Directs Over 1bn RUR to Green Projects in First Half of Year

October 11, 2012. Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works (MMK) analyzed its environmental management system performance in the first half of 2012.
The company’s environmental management system has been certified in accordance with the ISO 14001: 2004 requirements. The analysis has shown that MMK’s production activity in the six months of 2012 complied with the Russian Federation’s legal requirements as well as the international standards for environmental protection
The enterprise was quite successful in implementing its water protection projects. The gross dumping of pollutants in the nearby bodies of water decreased by 22.1% in the six months of 2012 against the six months of 2011, while the specific dumping figures declined by 27.6% and amounted to 9.31 kilos per ton. What is more, MMK recycled 5.69m tons of smelter slag in the first half of this year.
The specific pollutants dumping figures dropped by 6.1% in the six months of 2012 and reached 19.6 kilos per ton, while the gross dumping figures went down by 0.31% against a year earlier.
MMK’s environmental protection spending came to more than 1.1bn RUR, including about 480m RUR spent on the capital construction of environmental facilities.
