Yekaterinburg Orbital Motorway to Be Completed by 2016

13 July 2012 (11:47)

The construction of the last ring of Yekaterinburg orbital motorway will start this year, the Governor’s PR Department reports.

Governor of Sverdlovsk Region Evgeny Kuivashev and Chairman of Russian Motorways Public Company Sergey Kelbakh signed a protocol of intentions between the region’s government and the corporation in the course of Innoprom 2012 exhibition on July 12. The protocol is related to the construction of the southern half of the motorway ring. To implement this project, Russian Motorways will set up its first joint daughter company in the region.

The last section of the motorway between Moscow and Chelyabinsk tracts will be started as soon as this year. According to the project, it will be 25.5km long and will require 15.5bn RUR worth of investments, which is 3.5 times more expensive than the section that has already been launched (4bn RUR). The increase in spending has to do with the fact that this section will be a first-rate freeway with four lanes and an in-built option for two more lanes. It will be launched by 2016, but only if the funding proves sufficient. This point is currently being negotiated over with Chairman of Avtodor Corporation Sergey Kostin.

The construction of Yekaterinburg Orbital Motorway began as early as 1994. 41km have been built in nearly two decades, and Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, and Serov tracts have been connected.

A quarter of the motorway section between Moscow and Chelyabinsk tracts might become tolled, Sverdlovsk Region Transport & Roads Minister Gennady Marenkov said this was possible as early as last April.
